Married in 1986, the Petriws learned first-hand about the usefulness of high quality pet food when they found themselves sharing their home with three young dogs and a cat (two bouviers, a Lab and a Siamese cat named "Fabian"). Shedding and back yard clean up soon became very "near and dear" to their hearts.

In 1988 they started the "Paws & Claws, Quality Pet Foods" chain, opening seven stores in Edmonton (including one in Grande Prairie) over the next four years.

Recognizing that a pet’s health (and the owner’s enjoyment of the pet) is influenced by the pet’s diet, one of the main goals of Paws & Claws was to make it easier for all pet owners to benefit from the improved health and well being that comes with super-premium pet foods. The Paws & Claws stores were sold in 2002 but, during their time in operation, were renowned for carrying the very best pet foods and supplies available in the U.S., Canada, & world-wide, combining them with useful, reliable, plain-language information for their customers.

Four children, and two "new" Bouviers (the original dogs have long since passed away) keep Ella and Nestor busy on the home front. Their efforts are now focussed on wholesale distribution (Trident Wholesale Pet Supplies Ltd.) and mail order On-line Store business which serve clients across Canada and abroad.
